Welcome to our dream come true – Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS). Established in 1997, the Eklavya Model Residential Schools system is a unique initiative designed to provide quality education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students across India. This program was launched under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, with the vision to promote academic excellence and holistic development in a nurturing residential environment.
Eklavya Model Residential Schools are fully residential, co-educational institutions affiliated with CBSE, New Delhi, offering classes from VI to XII. Managed by the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, these schools are committed to fostering an inclusive and culturally responsive educational experience. Admission to EMRS is conducted through a selection process that ensures representation of ST students from across the country.
Key Facts and Milestones:
- 1997: Establishment of the first Eklavya Model Residential School.
- 2006: Expansion of EMRS network to over 50 schools nationwide.
- 2018: Government’s announcement to establish at least one EMRS in each block with more than 50% ST population and at least 20,000 tribal persons.
- 2020: Total number of operational EMRS reaches 285 schools across India.
- 2022: Introduction of digital learning initiatives to enhance educational outcomes.

Our AIM
EMRS aims to provide quality modern education with a strong emphasis on preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities. The curriculum is designed to achieve a balance between academic rigor and cultural enrichment, ensuring students receive a well-rounded education. Special focus is placed on promoting national integration through student exchange programs and implementing a three-language formula to enhance linguistic diversity.

- To provide good quality modern education to talented children predominantly from Scheduled Tribes without regard to their economic conditions.
- To ensure that all students of Eklavya Model Residential Schools attain a reasonable level of competence in three language formula.
- To serve, in each district, as focal points for improvements in the quality of school education through sharing of experiences and facilities.

Salient Features of Eklavya Model Residential Schools
Eklavya Model Residential Schools draw their student strength from talented children selected through a merit-based test called the Eklavya Model Residential School Selection Test (EMRSST). This test is designed and conducted by the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS). Held annually on a national level, the test is objective, class-neutral, and crafted to ensure that tribal children from rural areas are not at a disadvantage while attempting it.
EMRS reserves seats specifically for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students, ensuring that these communities have ample representation and access to quality education. A significant percentage of seats are allocated to girls to promote gender equality and empowerment.
Eklavya Model Residential Schools are fully residential and co-educational, offering free education to all enrolled students. This includes free lodging, boarding, textbooks, uniforms, and other essentials, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to quality education.
In line with national educational policies, EMRS adheres to the three-language formula. This approach promotes linguistic diversity and proficiency, with instruction in the regional language, Hindi, and English, ensuring students are well-prepared for a multilingual world.
The medium of instruction at EMRS is predominantly the regional language up to Class VIII, gradually transitioning to Hindi and English. This approach helps students develop strong language skills while preserving their cultural identity.
EMRS actively promotes national integration through student exchange programs between different states and regions. These initiatives foster understanding and unity among students from diverse cultural backgrounds, strengthening the fabric of national solidarity.
Eklavya Model Residential Schools are strategically located in tribal-dominated areas across India. This ensures that students from remote and underrepresented regions have access to quality education and opportunities for personal and academic growth.
